January 26 through March 8, 2008

Grand Opening of our new location, featuring:
MARGI SCHARFF
Opening reception: SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 2008; 6-10PM

OVERTONES gallery is pleased to open its new location with a retrospective exhibition of Margi Scharff’s work entitled “A Life Well-Traveled”. The exhibition tracks the life and work of the artist, who lost her battle to ovarian cancer in July 2007.

Margi Scharff was a mixed-media artist who has worked in a wide range of both traditional and non-traditional materials in installation, drawing, photography, sculpture, assemblage and collage. “A Life Well-Traveled” chronicles her journey from her installations of the early 90s, sculptures from the mid-90s, to her very last pieces created towards the end of her life.
Margi Scharff gained prominence with her jewel-like collages, which she assembled on the road, while traveling from Mexico to India, Nepal, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan. She collected found materials, traveling on a ten-dollar-a-day budget, creating and exhibiting her collages along the way.
In commemoration of Margi Scharff’s art and life, OVERTONES gallery has published a book of her art and writing from her journeys in India. The book, entitled “Margi Scharff: On India Time,” will premiere at the opening of Scharff’s exhibit.
Margi Scharff was a recepient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant that helped her win her first battle against 4th stage ovarian cancer in 2006. Her art is in numerous public and private collections and has been exhibited internationally. Margi Scharff’s art estate is represented by OVERTONES gallery.OVERTONES is a contemporary Los Angeles art gallery with an exhibition programme that strives to intertwine beauty and social action, and reach out beyond the confines of established art-world structures in an effort to engage a wide range of audiences.
