Works by: Marietta Hoferer, Stas Orlovski, Ilene Sunshine
opening reception: Saturday, May 13th, 2006; 7-11pm
OVERTONES is pleased to present "Afloat," a group exhibition featuring Los Angeles based artist Stas Orlovski, and New York based artists Marietta Hoferer and Ilene Sunshine.
German-born Marietta Hoferer uses strapping tape as her material for creating luscious and seductive, yet quiet and mysterious works on paper. Hoferer cuts the tape into little fragments and builds the parts in layers of intricate patterns over a graphite grid. The results are "drawings" that hover somewhere between the invention of the grid and the nature of snowflakes-the strips of tape refract light in ways that cause shifts of tone and value, depending on the angle of viewing. Hoferer's works nod to modernism, and, in their intricate designs, to centuries of weaving.
Los Angeles artist Stas Orlovski draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources: from Russian children's books to Dutch botanical paintings, exploring the sentimental image as a vehicle for personal expression. By mounting delicate Japanese papers onto stretched canvas, Orlovski creates a subtle ground that registers every detail, brushstroke, smudge or tear. Using a range of historical mediums and techniques, Orlovski constructs a pictorial space in which images appear to be fading and dissolving, recreating the sensations of loss, memory and desire.
New York based artist Ilene Sunshine makes sculpture and works on paper by combining natural with fabricated materials: discarded Christmas trees, leaves, plastic bags, thread and string are merged to create works which, with their presence, reconstruct the space they inhabit. Sunshine's primary formal concern is the negative space: "My sculptures and drawings are, in essence, compositions of palpable voids". Sunshine's works emerge from the cacophony of the New York city streets-they are an urban dweller's conversations with nature, rich with pleasure of making "something out of nothing."
OVERTONES is a Los Angeles art venue that supports and promotes creative endeavors in all artistic disciplines, with emphasis on emerging and mid-career artists, international collaboration and social responsibility. OVERTONES is dedicated to searching outside the confines of established art institutions and presenting work that has the potential to engage a wide range of audiences.
