“Filigree”
February 18 - March 26, 2006
Works by: Simone Lourenço, Carole Silverstein
opening reception: Saturday, February 18, 2006; 7-11pm
OVERTONES is pleased to present "Filigree", a two-person exhibition featuring recent work by artists SIMONE LOURENÇO and CAROLE SILVERSTEIN.
Simone Lourenço's drawings reference nature and its abundant motifs, through use of vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Laurenço's intent is to "capture the movement of growth and infiniteness in plant and animal life". She builds the space in her intimate creations by using elements of collage and layering and excising parts to build on line and detail. Through her explorations of the cyclical beauty of nature, Lourenço often finds herself thinking of people when creating her drawings, thus expanding the circle to include all living things.
Simone Lourenço is a New York based artist of Portuguese decent who has exhibited her both nationally and internationally. "Filigree" is her first exhibition in Los Angeles.
Carole Silverstein's dense paintings on mylar depict elaborate patterns, hand-painted in a repetitive manner. Silverstein's patterns are inspired by ornamental forms from various cultures, that are symbolically, and often spiritually, encoded: Celtic knots, Japanese waves or clouds, Islamic geometries based on stars and florets, embody entire cosmological and religious views. The unique surface of mylar reveals light within the patterns, as if to evoke a hidden world behind, pulling the viewer to look beyond the surface. Silverstein's paintings entice us to change our way of looking-to slow it down into a trance-like, meditative experience, and look beyond the apparent.
Carole Silverstein is a Los Angeles based artist whose works have been widely exhibited across the United States.
