“Disruption”
May 17 - June 14, 2003
curated by Amitis Motevalli featuring work by Jacqueline Salloum & Vicente Razo
Opening reception: Saturday, May 17, 2003
An interplay of fantastic and banality bring two contemporary artists together to raise the level of discourse in the effects of neo-colonialism. Representations of 8Fantastic as banal', point to a world without order. In such a world, the systems that indicate the world's order turnout to beassumptions without any ground in reality.
We find Salloum stripping a fantastic act of forced demolition into a pure banality of a Caterpillar product packaging in her piece "Caterrorpillar". The viewer is not shocked or surprised by the real and is more attached to the pop advertising. Razo follows the exercise by encapsulating poverty, destruction and rebellion into seemingly ordinary tourist collectibles of Mexico City in his resin Pyramids.
This dance between fantastic and banality in the works of Salloum and Razo manages to emulate the neo-colonialist practice at dulling the senses of reality and heightening the banality of popular culture. Jacqueline Salloum and Vicente Razo dialogue in the perversity of a constructed reality, while remaining conscious of actuality.
