“I Am Human And I Deserve To Be Loved”
June 21 - July 19, 2003
4Works by: Amir Fallah, Elliott Hundley, Nathan Mabry
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 21, 2003; 7 - 11PM
OVERTONES presents "I Am Human And I Deserve To Be Loved," a group show about love, romance and hopeless pursuit of both. Amir Fallah, Elliott Hundley and Nathan Mabry are young upcoming artists who all have a distinctly unique and playful approach to the vast array of emotions that anyone who has ever been in love can relate to.
Amir makes references to the roller coaster ride of romantic relationships with bright, pop culture colors and mash notes that one could find hidden inside the notebook of a highschooler experiencing his first encounters with love and heartbreak. He draws his imagery from his bicultural background; being an Iranian boy growing up in suburban America, and combines elements of beautiful filigree Iranian design with some serious American graffiti chops.
Elliott makes "three dimensional drawings" with a collage of hundreds of miniscule cutout images pinned together, or onto a foam board, to create a densely textured play of relationships in a way an obsessive painter might use individual dabs of pigment. The conflation of the small stories contained in his one-of-a-kind palette results in a larger image that generates a surprising and eccentric energy from the relationships and visual activity of its parts.
Nathan approaches love and its trials and tribulations in sculptural form and investigates cultural stereotypes by converting the serious into the trivial. He recontextualizes familiar objects by engaging the popular culture, resulting in idiosyncratic goofiness. In this juxtaposition he creates work that comes alive with sincerity, humor and optimism.
In a world gone mad, Amir, Elliott and Nathan's collaborative exhibition reminds us all to save our souls and step out of the serious life by entering the playground of love with a silly heart.
